Who you would sit down with.

I'm Hyunjoo Yoon, a licensed marriage and family therapist in San Francisco. I work with parents, teens and children when a family is going through a change: a new stepfamily, a separation, or the care of an aging parent.

I look at what happens between people in a family, not at who is to blame. Sessions can be the whole family, a parent on their own or a teen on their own, and I explain what stays private before anyone says a word.

I keep the pace slow enough for the youngest person in the room. You will not be asked to take sides, and nobody is made to talk.

“A family doesn't have to agree on what is wrong to begin. It only has to sit in the same room.”

My approach.

A few ways of working, always chosen with the family.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Family systems therapy

We look at the patterns between people: who talks to whom, who goes quiet, who carries the load. Then we try small changes in those patterns.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Attachment-informed work

Parents and children are often trying to reach each other and missing. We slow down and look at what each one is reaching for.

  3. 03

Step 3: Play and drawing with younger children

Younger children often show what they cannot say. We use play and drawing, with a parent in the room.

  4. 04

Step 4: Separate time for each person

Where it helps, each person has a session of their own, so no one has to speak in front of the person they are worried about.
